I was born at the end of March just after the season turns and the days start to get a little longer. It’s a period of time that seems to defy the normal pattern of things. I often feel like this time of year can be defined more by the things it is not, the way it exists in the in between. It is not spring nor winter. It is not a season for red wine nor white. The days are neither long nor short, although every extra moment of sunlight feels like a gift. It is not the season of artichokes nor the season of citrus. Little feels right. This cake is so much a sign of the season—medley of things and also nothing in particular, not a carrot cake, nor an upside cake, nor a sticky date pudding per se. But I always think of carrot cake this time of year, something slightly sweet, that’s bright and warm in equal measure. The ideal dessert for early spring, I hope you think so too.
